At 10:30 Monday morning Beijing Time, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck in China's northwestern Xinjiang region.

More than 1,000 houses and school buildings have collapsed in a village in Bachu County, the epicenter of the earthquake.

Several other places including Jiashi County, Kashi City, Bachu County, Artux County and Markit County also felt strong tremors.

China's official news agency reports that this is the strongest earthquake to hit the region since 1949.
