Monday, May 13, 2002, 10:00 PM , a magnitude 4.9 quake struck on the Castro fault 3 miles southwest of Gilroy, California.
According to news reports, some scientists feel that this quake may be an indication that the area is becoming earthquake active, after a long period of quiet since the Loma Prieta quake.
The quake occurred 4.7 miles under the surface of the earth. Scientists who found no evidence of ground rupture, say this quake never reached the surface. No injuries were reported. Other than a residence in San Jose which reportedly caught fire when a hot water heater toppled, damage was minimal.
Although the quake was only 1/1000th the magnitude of the 1994 Northridge or the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, shaking was felt as far as Santa Rosa, 128 miles from the epicenter.
